In the Czech Republic the average # of SMS's sent per month is 30 or 40 per subscriber depending on the carrier and they cost 3 cents for "post paid" subscribers and 6 cents for "pre paid" subscribers.

Well, that's interesting. 160 characters is 1280 bits, correct? At G* 9.6K data rate, it would be transmitted in eight seconds, and, at 1.5USD/minute, that would cost 0.20, or near the high end of your range.

Actually G* is supposed to support SMS, but I haven't seen any separate pricing for it.
