Except, and this was my point, the long and shorts were not both selling as the price fell over summer and early fall.

As Tunica fondly pointed out on a regular basis, the short interest was considerably higher in summer, estimated at 70 million by Irwin Jacobs, before tailing off into the decline. In other words, 22 million short shares were covered even as the share price of CNC fell! And that was into the teeth of a very deliberate attempt on Jacobs' part to engineer a short squeeze.

Plain and simple, this is a very liquid stock and there are a LOT of shares out there. A high short interest is not as positive as many here would have you believe.
