A family friend, who is a professor at a major university on the East coast, has decided to postpone his retirement indefinitely out of necessity. He realized, only this week, that the assets in his retirement account had dwindled to 50% of what was perceived earlier when his retirement plans were communicated to his employer. The magnitude of 2000 stock market decline will hit home hard for two thirds of American families who will receive their quarterly reports sometime in January.
