I note this paragraph from this morning's Wall Street Journal (which, BTW, is the most biased mainstream GOP publication this side of Forbes):

After an extraordinary period of economic good luck, a lot of things went bad at the same time. The stock market's decline intensified. The Internet bubble burst. Energy prices rose. The Middle East blew up. Earlier Fed rate increases began to bite. Election day dragged on for more than a month. Bankers and junk bond investors grew more cautious. President-elect George Bush and his running mate, Dick Cheney, began bad-mouthing the economy in public. Unrestrained optimism gave way to caution. Expectations grew less ebullient.

Pretty good summary, IMO.
