By the time Cramer figures things out, it's probably time to do the opposite.

I think he did alright this year and 1999. I believe he did poorly in 1998.

He just missed the optical move up in stocks like JDSU and SDLI---probably lost money on these. That is one reason to avoid certain stocks. If you are late to the party and you lose money, you are more likely to go back to what you are more familiar with.
I think he lost a lot of money on Nortel.

Optical is going to be a great sector but I will only buy stock and hold this over the longer term.

BTW--I am actually glad investors are not as bullish on optical as they were in the past.

Cramer defends his "hubris:"

Talk about timing it wrong.

When he says he's made millions over the past years, he forgets to say he's also lost millions.

Someone should tell him you don't downgrade a stock or sector at the bottom based on information that's already been factored in. Now's the time to say, "Yes, there have been carrier spending worries. Valuations have come in line with more guarded expectations. We think it's time to decide which companies will benefit even if some carriers lower their spending plans and the sector is less explosive than earlier thought. . . ."

Having said this, I'd go one step further and say some segments of the telecom sector will continue to be explosive and that fiber optics components is at the top of that list with JDSU (with SDLI) so much in the lead there's not even a close second.
