Well mechanics sure get my admiration.

Even changing plugs and wires on this engine is frustrating. You have to dismantle the throttle linkage to get to one of the plugs. And I'm never sure that I have a couple of the plug boots on properly, they're too deep into all the plumbing to get a good grip on them.

Now I'm wondering if I might have a bad valve. Isn't there a rough test you can do with the exhaust to check for a bad valve? A slip of paper, watching for it to suck back up the tailpipe?

I've had two recalls that I know about. One was the distributor cap, when I first got the car in '86. Later there was a recall on the injectors. Seems the first design would begin to leak as they got old, and your engine would catch fire. Nasty.

Car companies need to give us PC connections to the onboard computers. The primitive computer on this car just blinks some lights at you, and it's hard to get to. But the blinking lights are supposed to help isolate EC and electrical problems, so I may have to squeeze under the dash and check it, just to see what its Morse Code has to say. It may say nothing at all. I don't think it detects a bad valve. I'll dig out the shop manual later.
