...It is not at all uncommon for a federal employee to sit around all day reading newspapers because he has displeased his boss, who can't fire him, but won't give him any work, hoping he will get bored and quit. I have run into several people in this situation.

I'm inclined to believe that this is the best possible outcome. I certainly don't want this employee actually doing anything that affects me. Nor is he likely to be a productive contributor in the private sector. At least he will make a contribution by using his taxpayer paid salary to vote on the question of which producers of consumer goods should be allowed to continue and which should release the economic resources at their disposal back to the market.

Regards, Don

"Bush Names Ashcroft Att. General
By Scott Lindlaw
Associated Press Writer
Friday, Dec. 22, 2000; 10:52 a.m. EST

AUSTIN, Texas –– President-elect Bush nominated defeated Missouri Sen. John Ashcroft to be attorney general on Friday, choosing a conservative Republican who lost his re-election bid to a dead man.

"An effective attorney general must be a person of prudent character and executive ability," Bush said. He also said there must be a commitment to "fair and firm and impartial administration of justice. ..."

By this single appointment in replacing Janet Reno, Bush's administration is assured of success. It's too bad that we cannot know who Gore would have appointed.
