Dear Bernard: And its not just farmers. My brother and his wife inherited a plumbing company and stocks. they had to sell ALL the liquid assets to pay the inheritance tax to keep the company. My jeweler fears the same thing. JDN

Sorry, didn't mean to comment primarily on the estate tax, which I do think should be abolished. I just meant that the whole orientation of trying to "save the family farm" is misplaced. I understand that it holds a special place in the culture, but the percentage of people engaged in rural occupations has inevitably shrunk, and the introduction of economic rationalization, such economies of scale, has changed the face of many farms already. There is little that can be done, with harming other sectors of the economy, and overall economic well being.......
