Keyspan to Suspend Gas Supply to Some Businesses Over Holidays
By Jim Polson

New York, Dec. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Keyspan Corp., the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeastern U.S., asked 650 large customers on Long Island to turn off their service Sunday night because subfreezing temperatures are expected to drive pipelines to full capacity through Wednesday.

All the affected businesses buy gas at a reduced rate with the understanding that they lose service during severe weather, Keyspan spokeswoman Bonnie Hobyan said. A test Nov. 15 verified that all the businesses could operate on backup supplies of heating oil for 10 days, she said.

``This is not a natural-gas supply problem. We could definitely buy more gas if our lines could handle it, but they can't,'' Hobyan said. Keyspan also can turn back the thermostats of 3,600 New York City commercial and institutional customers by remote control, she said.

The 650 so-called interruptible Long Island customers could burn a total of 260,000 gallons of heating oil a day, she said. Keyspan sells gas to 2.4 million business and residential customers.

Benchmark natural-gas prices have quintupled on the New York Mercantile Exchange to $9.58 per million BTUs since January.
