For many years I was about the most "liberal" person you could meet. I was a radical in the 60's and had so many causes. But, you know, I have learned a lot over the years. Its easy to try to put the burden of helping all who need help on the government, but it just does not work. It is not the nature of government. It comes from somewhere else and I do believe that the less we rely on government to try to answer these needs, the better we are. You laugh at "compasionate conservatism" but I think that is where we need to go. Whether it be the environment or the needs of the poor, it HAS to go to the heart of people. Government cannot do that. It only degrades the process & makes it fail. It also attracts the cons and the scam artists. It cannot be institutionalized. It has not worked in the past, and it never will. The more we turn to Government to solve these problems, the WORSE they will become. Government does not have a soul... people do. So, what is the answer? It sure ain't socialism. The more we trend toward that way of thinking, the less individuals will contribute. It is about personal responsibility and personal morality. The burden needs to be on individuals, not the government. I think that we are moving in that direction. I do think that the "liberal" viewpoint is dying. And for good reason. But I am not a pessimist. Get rid of the government influence in these areas and let the heart of man prevail. We do not need the govt. or the democrats (God forbid) to help us to be moral. People will do the right thing. Let them take the responsibility. Do NOT place it on the government. OK...I am done ranting. Hope you have a great Christmas & a wonderful New Year!!! Don't be mad at me.... Susan
