Mark that is a great story! How quickly were you able to get back to work?

What a marvelous circumstance to be in one of the few investments that has thrived in our current debacle.

It's funny you mention being laid off triggering getting out in time.

It's being laid off (and called back from working in France on a fat relo package!) in 1999 that made me think of taking some sabbatical time, learning about investing, and putting some money in the market. But I wasn't willing to bet the farm. I spent 4 months reading everything I could before even opening an online account. A home internet account is the most valuable investment I ever made! Though I've used the internet, newsgroups, etc almost since the beginning.

I sold out in March since I was besides myself with the way the overall market was going and have stayed mostly cash since. Even with the short term gains tax it turned out to be worth it.

Strange how things turn out, too bad I didn't get in on the bull run a little sooner. But I didn't get wiped out like those Microsofties margined on their stock options.

And working in Europe has been a cultural experience money can't buy. And I can say this - the transparency and access to financial information in the US is so far beyond anything I saw in France or Europe it isn't funny. Good luck trying to find out what kind of options or salaries the CEO or other insiders in a french company are awarding themselves.
