Oh, well then, I think that we agree, dial tone is a "given". But if it is not there, I believe that our reaction would be much like when taking a nice hot shower and our spouse turns on the hot water in another room.

We may not think about it much with the current telco service, but we will damn well notice if the cableco or powerco or other alternate carrier doesn't provide the same level of reliability.

I was in the beta test for one of the early IP telephony solutions and it only took two occasions where I didn't get dial tone before I switched back to my normal phone. Fortunately, most of the reliability problems were eventually resolved.
