It sometimes takes knowing the relationships of technologies and their social implications, in order to fully despise them, or embrace them, as it were.

I think it was William Burroughs that said something like, technology is a virus on the Earth and like any other virus it eventually consumes its host.

I don't care how much you understand technology, no one really knows the full implications or effects of any technology on society until years after it is unleashed.

I understand perfectly well why people become Luddites. One of the most sensible approaches I've ever encountered was the way the Amish deal with phones. They will allow use of a cell phone, but it is not allowed in the house. Most of their phones are communal in nature (several families share one) and they are in a separate building attached to an answering machine. Their attitude is that a ringing machine should never interrupt human interaction or prayer.
