Tinker; I think the point that Judith was trying to make was that the information for the MEMS device to know when it should zig and when it should zag has to be an electrical signal. The tuning and bending of the mirror is an electrical event. Part of the packet of light or the previous packet has to be decoded ,converted into an electrical signal, read and the instructions then tell the mirror to move up or down. I'm no engineer but my electronic expert tells me that as yet there are no devices which can switch without at least some form of signal converted into the electrical domain
