i'd have to agree that the right of free religious observance 'should' mean that public officials don't attempt to set their own view as a sort of standard. my feeling is that only elected officials of a persuasion that generally feels all other persuasions are wrong and damned would do such a thing as public prayer in our society. in short, i think they rather have an axe to grind and "the only true religion" is the wheel and the stone.

it really isn't intolerance on the part of people like myself, who feel their religious preference is something best exercised on private time in a private manner and expect the same of their elected officials, but the intolerance of people who need to use public office to press forward every nuance of their claims to sole-salvation that cause a problem. i know some will find these statements offensive, and i am truly sorry. but i truly feel that true religious intolerance exists mainly in those who feel themselves truly religious. if you wonder where this comes from, since i really do avoid religious and political arguments, my only real dealings with 'church people' has been, many years past, with meeting house quakers.

on a lighter note: who would have thot that saddam had economic advisors who were so far ahead of the curve. i don't like the sob one bit, but i really have to hand it to him on this one - euros for oil, he may have nailed the arch satan a good one. don
