The way in which you used the term was a clear attempt to discount the credibility of the Attorney General to-be.In any event, it appears that the right wing of the GOP is happy with the appointment of Ashcroft, the Bible-thumpin', gospel-singin', revival-fires lawyer from the Ozarks to head up our Justice Department. Message 15077001 You could easily have referred to Ashcroft by less inflammatory means. But you didn’t. You assaulted his religious practice because it is fashionable amongst liberals to assault Christians who take Christ and His Word seriously. Yet, should Christians simply tell the truth, employing the language of the Scriptures in referring to heathens, Sodomites and other reprobates, those who assault Christians almost uniformly would consider themselves ill-used. I have no problem with heathens ridiculing Christians. It comes naturally to them. But if they want folks to feign respect for their heathen beliefs, then they ought at least feign respect for others. It is disingenuous to try insulting others, claiming the insult was not an insult. That’s like me calling liberals heathens, Sodomites and reprobates while claiming I mean no harm by it. Now I should say I do not mean any harm by it. I used the terms only to show the other side of the sword. If you folks do not want generally to be referred to as heathens, sodomites, perverts, reprobates, towel-heads, Aye-rabs, cabbage-worshipers and other children of the devil, then maybe you should refuse to insult Christians. If you want to continue insulting Christians then that is quite fine, but I think it should be a free-for-all. Christians should not be the only group approved for ridicule, especially in view of the fact they believe the truth and everyone else believes crap. If insults can be casually thrown around regarding Christians, then I should be free to insult anyone’s beliefs. You Buddhist? I should be free to ridicule your worship of a ridiculous fat-assed green piece of friggin’ rock. You Hindu? Then what you sick folks do with cows is completely up for grabs. Perhaps you are one of those ridiculous blacks who follow that ridiculous, completely made up holiday by that most abominable name “Kwanzaa”? Then I should be free to casually make fun of your empty-headed celebration. You atheist? Then in fun I should be free to call you godless, sad, lonely, fatherless, doomed to the eternal fires of hell. Whether I am logically free to do this or not is meaningless to me personally, as I am constrained from it by simple scruples. More importantly I am constrained by Christ’s love. I do not really feel these things and I sincerely have no interest in saying them in earnest to anyone. But while you apparently are not thus constrained, surely you are capable of scruples. So then it is to simple scruples and not Christ that I make my appeal. It is improper to throw around cavalier insults regarding deeply held religious practice. If we do not want religious insults, then we should not use them ourselves.
