Will Ashcroft settle?
===
"In a 1998 letter to his constituents in which
he referenced the Justice Department’s
investigation of Microsoft, he declined to
speculate on the outcome of that investigation,
but said, “I am confident of this: whatever the
outcome, any effort by Congress to
micro-manage this dynamic sector of the
economy is doomed to backfire.”
Ashcroft went on to say that the “only thing
more frightening” than Congress trying to muck
with the high tech sector “is the notion that we
need the FIC — a Federal Internet
Commission” to regulate the industry along with
the Federal Communications Commission and
the Federal Trade Commission.
“Congress needs to remember that the
technology industry has flourished precisely
because the federal government has gotten out
of its way,” Ashcroft’s letter said.
