Tim,

The whole issue started out that dubya feels the need to increase defense spending; that you felt we were not defense ready. My side of the argument is that there is more than enough $$$ in the current budget to build a good defense. Dubya apparently wants to spend more.

The cost of toilet seats in the 80s is not relevant because the military is no longer spending that amount on toilet seats. It does serve as an example of waste, but there is weasteful spending in every major governemnt program. Would you argue against any increase for social programs (both entitlements and social programs that fall under "discresionary spending") until all waste is eliminated? How would you react to an argument that social programs or programs for environmnetal protection should not be increased because back in the 80s there was some example of stupid wastful spending? I don't think you would agree with such an argument. Thats why I say the toilet seat case is irrelevant to the issue of how much should be curently spent on defense.
