What happened? I guess the same thing that happened to Sun, AMD, Alpha, you name it. It takes longer to validate a new processor than originally planned.

absolutely. And a nod to Paul, I have been waiting so
long to see EV68 I don't even jump at the chance to
talk about it. Cynicism? Maybe. Tell you what... I've
learned a good lesson.

That's not vapor. That's hardware although not quite ready for primetime

There is long and difficult way from initial prototypes to a product. Sometimes a large and powerful company (not unlike Intel) can sell its first (not quite there) version (not unlike P4; wait till it's .13u) as a product. The fact that even Intel couldn't do that with Itanium tells me that probably there won't be a real product till the next version of ia64. Intel's past has its share of cancelled "new" ISAs. Let's hope for the sake of Intel shareholders that ia64 is not one of them.

It takes longer to validate a new processor than originally planned.

I think you are missing the fact that itanium is not only a new processor but also the first implementation of a new ISA. It is to be seen whether it is going to be successful or whether it will be cancelled like many similar attempts at Intel or whether it will be a niche product which will be used in RAID controllers etc. To repeat a point, so far very few (any?) Intel new ISA designs have had any commercial success.

Actually, I'm not the only one that considers it vapor.
The Itanic made number 5 out of the Top Ten vaporous
products for 2000:

wired.com

5: Intel's Itanium chips: Two years ago Intel said it
would have powerful new 64-bit chips for workstations and
servers out by the summer of 2000. But delivery of Itanium
(also known as IA-64 and Merced) has been pushed back
so consistently, the Register is calling it Intel's "Itanic."
"I've been hearing about it since 1997 and I actually
think new, whole Amigas are going to ship before this
ever sees the light of day," said Nathan Walls.
