Barnard, president of Barnard's Retail Trend Report, which forecasts retail industry trends and consumer spending patterns, said the last-minute shopping surge started on Friday. He expects average sales among stores that have been open a least a year to increase a bit more than 3 percent -- far below the growth of 6 percent to 6.5 percent posted last year. Still any growth would be higher than last year's extraordinary showing.

Much of the last-minute activity was the result of what Barnard called ``promotional gymnastics,'' where retailers did the marketing equivalent of headstands to bring in customers.

``Much of this promotional gymnastics comes at the expense of gross margins, and that will undoubtedly be reflected in fourth-quarter results,'' Barnard said.

Keith,

This is from your article and is very accurate from my experience this season. My on-line store is likely not indicative of anything but my traditional stores are.
