i met a man once, landed in tunisia in late '42. was in the invasion of italy ('43/44), then the invasion of south france ('44). won a bronze star when he took out an mg42 in jan of '45.

after the war he was one of 3 survivors from his original company. how many men in a company?... probably about 150 combat soldiers or more. i'll bet that many of the replacements in that company - well i'll bet they were replaced many times over.

so it appears to me it was, fight until one of 3 things happens:

1) you're wounded badly enough that you're sent home
2) you're killed
3) the war ends

brutal...
