The USPS appears to have some collective sense of humor, and might in fact here be displaying the rudiments of organic bureaucratic intelligence.

Yes, it does appear that we enjoy the oddball items. They make our day interesting, for one thing. Things I have seen go through the mail that might fit this test:

Christmas trees (wrapped in twine)
Truck tires (new, unwrapped)
Human remains (ashes; I had a cemetery on my route)
Live bees (some always get loose inside the office)
Live crickets (reptile food)
Live chicks
Live quail
Frogs for high school bio classes
Saddles, unwrapped
Luggage, unwrapped
Duffelbags (returning servicemen)
Rifles (shipped from US Arsenals)
Gold bars (you wouldn't believe how heavy)
Whole hams
Stinky food(fish?! cheese?!! durian?!?)(And I mean reallllllly stinky)
Coconuts, unwrapped
Letters in bottles (plastic)
Wooden postcards
Potholders (election gimmick)
