Short term recession based on psychological blows from a deflated market.
The market, in a true recession, is a lagging indicator. You'd have seen far worse in the way of economic figures if there was a real serious problem in the economy.
There are issues, to be sure, but they just aren't really as bad as some people would have us think.

What would be REALLY bad is if the Fed dropped rates drastically. That would only feed the problems that exist. However, a 1/4 to 1/2 point drop would add enough fuel to keep the economic engine chugging at a decent rate with moderate inflation.
The key for companies over the next 6 months is to address their debt and cost issues. If they do so in a well-defined manner, then things will pick up smartly in the second half of the year.
