Made a point Friday and Saturday of visiting retailers -- tried to catch as many different ones as I thought were important, from high-end electronics and appliances down to Walmart. All were a little shocked by the slowness of sales, although Walmart employees told me that they were have a pretty good year, though maybe not quite as good as last year. In speaking to some of them, I was surprised to see how quickly the R word has entered the vocabulary. Nobody was saying it was coming per se, but they were aware that it's being discussed by the folks with their hands on the economic levers.
