Your family history sounds very similar to mine. They were poor uneducated Irish. Those who did not succumb to tuberculosis and other diseases of that time worked in the factories or took in the sewing and laundry of the upper class. My grandmother told me of following the coal trucks along the New Haven streets, picking up what was dropped when the trucks hit ruts in the road. This was the primary source of heat in their home. A brutal existence, one which has been been softened considerably through thoughtful regulation in various industries over the past seventy five years.

Yes, I've read Sinclair's "The Jungle", not familiar with "The Octopus". Your pointsare well-taken, particularly that of our tendency to romanticize the past.
