Those companies have 1000's of employees that were at one time paper millionaires and now have options that are under water. - Some of them went out and bought houses and cars based on the value of the options. - Now their options have no value and they are losing their jobs. - I have heard stories of employees exercising their options earlier this year using borrowed money and then riding the stocks all the way down.
