Something to keep in mind this week:

The last week in December we usually have terrific gains running into the new year as many of the pros are on holiday and the individual investor can go hog wild.

This year even though many of the institutions may still be away, the players who have been going short all year are the one's with all the cash while longs are either stuck in positions or have seen their portfolio dwindle to nothing. It's unlikely that the short players will cover their position before the end of the year and realize the tax implications. Add to that possible margin selling we may see and it could be a flat to down market the rest of the year. We might see a good pop early next year as short covering and cash inflows give us a little rally. A positive break of this downward channel is the key.

But who knows? Has logic really prevailed at all this year?
