You're assuming that everything that goes down 50-90% just keeps on going down at the very end of tax-selling season. That's a riskier assumption that mine, that we are way-overdue for continuous rally days because everything but the Great depression has been priced into most tech stocks.
I sold my WCOM at 26 bought it back near its low and and quite happy (though a bit impatient) holding it now. I wouldn't go near any short positions at this point. To me that's like going long back in April. The bear drop has simply played itself out IMHO. There is simply no air left in anyone's balloon. I also believe it's unpatriotic to wish stocks even lower now though that may be idealistic on my part. This country needs a market recovery badly. Our entire economy depends on it.
