you're on the right track, except you're closing down too much. when defragging, it's a good practice to shut down all applications that are running except explorer and systray. (same for when installing new software... shut down everything except those two.)

that should work well.

Try this program.
e-technik.com

I use it with win98 & it claims win95 compatibality. It basically removes everything it can from the various system files, runs degfrag and restores them.
