Legend expects China home PC sales to double

SHANGHAI--Legend Holdings, China's No. 1 PC maker, expects sales of home computers to double in 2001 with the launch last Tuesday of its second-generation Internet models, the China Daily's Business Weekly reported, citing Legend vice president Yang Yuanqing.

"Although the international PC market looks gloomy, Legend will maintain a growth rate of about 30 to 40 percent in coming years," Yang was quoted as saying, adding that this year's sales of more than 1 million personal computers will double next year.

The domestic market still looms as Legend's major battlefield because of the growth potential offered by the population base, Yang told the paper.

On Dec. 12, Legend said it would spend $5.8 million to build a plant with a production capacity of 1.5 million computers a year in Shanghai's Pudong commercial district.

After a summer sales campaign, Legend's earnings for the first half, ended Sept. 30, more than doubled, to $52.6 million.
