Good post Derek, seems to me the key difference is education, and a strong culture which values the family.

I am far from an expert on Malcolm X, but I think it was his pilgrimage to the middle east that helped him come to that conclusion. It is a real eye-opener to see conditions in places were people know the real meaning of being poor.

The last thing people in the inner cities of this country need is extra excuses. I have many friends from south of the border and on average they have very little sympathy for what they see in our "downtrodden". Most manage to take care of themselves and send money back to family members plus accumulate money in the bank. People who come here with a history of struggling to get one meal a day have very little in common with those that allow themselves to be "kept" at a subsistence level without any ambitions.
