A cup of tea. That's so nice.
What an interesting article from the Rand Institute. I normally dislike Peikoff but I think he shows some good sense with this one!
It is true, in a cynical way, don't you think?
It would give the non-religious more of a sense of purpose as they engage in the season. They would feel the season rightfully belongs to them, too.
Let's face it, celebrating winter solstice seems to be no more convincing than honoring a fictional Jesus' birthdate; pagans just try to justify their activities by way of even older rituals and celebrations. It;s a competition-
"Get off my playground"
"I was here first!"
"My god is older than your god."

Turning the holiday into a celebration of our material success, which it really already is for most, even those who try to celebrate it spritually, would let us enjoy what we're forced into doing and feel guilty about anyway.
We measure it in economic terms already--
holiday sales down!
avg family expenditure this year is greater than....
Neiman Marcus gift of the year costs 165,000! Show her you love her!

(Dan is STILL at the table.
I am about to hand him one of the many bottles, forget the glass, of very old single malt scotches that his employees seem to feel he needs to endure them and which they provide at this holiday time. Or perhaps he has talked about the terrible burden he bears with his wife and her stock trades.)
