hcm, I would reformat first. Otherwise the reinstall might not eliminate all garbage. Can you ask whoever is in charge of the server?

G.

You can avoid a reformat that would be followed by having to re-establish the network connection from the command prompt by doing the following:

1. Upload anything to be saved to the server.
2. Make a directory (I call mine Win98) and download the Windows 98 cabs, etc. from the server into it. I presume it's all located in one install directory on the server.
3. Go to windows explorer and delete all directories on your boot drive except for "program files", windows, and recycler.
4. Empty the recycle bin.
5. Do a shutdown-restart and hit F8 when booting and go to safe mode command prompt. Set path=c:\windows\command (It may already be; I don't recall)
6. If you're in perfectionist mode; type attrib and reset/remove any hidden, system, or read-only attributes from all files except command.com, io.sys, and msdos.sys and then delete them. (If you plan on using or accessing compressed volumes leave drvspace.bin and dblspace.bin alone.)
7. Type deltree /y progra~1 (do a dir to make sure I spelled that right; I'm on Win2000 so I can't check it.); get a cup of coffee and watch bloomberg for a half hour.
8. Type deltree /y windows; get another cup of coffee and watch CNBC for a half hour.
(Note: I believe you can eliminate the wait in steps 7 and 8 if you type \windows\smartdrv after step 6.)
9. Reboot; ignore any error messages (they are caused by msdos.sys thinking windows is still there); cd into the win98 directory created in step 2, and run setup.
10. The only caveat here is to make sure that Win98 either recognizes your network card or you have a directory on the hard drive with the correct drivers. It also doesn't hurt to check other drivers for the latest versions and store them since windows won't always find (or have )the correct device. You also should make a note of your network settings; ie domain or workgroup, DHCP or fixed address, Gateway, etc

I'd re-install over whatever you have already. If it fixes things, you've saved a ton of effort because your old drivers and settings were brought forward. If not, you'll need to clear your system first, because the problem is being brought forward too.

Cheers, PW.
