although obviously, market share alone is relatively meaningless (the 10% could be, as DS points out, a disruptive innovation on the way up, or the last gasp of an old architecture).

I did not point that out, in this case. But competing against a 90% marketshare, even with disruptive innovation, would require some diligence by the investor before investing in the 10% shareholder.

The idea of investing in the company with a 10% marketshare because their "potential" is greater than the company with a 90% share is preposterous. It is akin to buying a stock because it costs less per share than its competitor.
