It must be Schwab - I get instant execution on 'at market' buys and sells up to 500 shares, but it takes about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on short sells. By that time the price has usually dropped too much for a decent short. So, I try to anticipate a top instead. I need to try Datek. Are you using a market or limit order when you enter a short position?

Starting to accumulate ICGE here at $3. Buying ICGE is almost like buying a basket of cheapos, one pops and it takes ICGE with it.

Maybe a trend change at the close does indicate a gap up/down in the opposite direction?
