For many years I have served as a Judge (and board member) for the Silicon Valley Science and Engineering Fair, and also for local school science fairs.

Schools almost always have display cases at the entrance where they display awards. At all the schools I have been to except one, those cases were occupied by athletic trophies.

That one was a private Islamic school. In their cases, they had ACADEMIC awards and honors, including awards in their previous school science fairs. I was quite impressed by the quality of their projects. The bad ones were good, the best were outstanding.

This was the first year they had entered projects in the regional Silicon Valley fair. They walked off with 6 firsts- -the most any single middle school (junior high) had ever won.
