johnd, how about Windows 2000 64 bit server, aka Datacenter, aka Whistler must be sucking up a lot of R&D costs. Improving scalability, availability, RAS ,and suopporting >8 servers (32, 64), > 4 GB memory with Whistler takes a lot of SW folks, I guess. Maybe Microsoft is betting the company, going after Sun big time. Problem is all this probably doesn't start shipping in volume until McKinley is in production in 2002.

Werefrog, do you have any idea why MSFT is spending 16% more in R&D in FY01 after a 23% increase in FY2000?

I'm just guessing here, but couldn't that be because they account for buying their competitors as R&D? Or because Windows has become so krufty, complex, and bloated, that it has become ridiculously expensive to maintain, and impossible to upgrade (which is why it basically hasn't changed since 1995)? Or because they employ some clever accountants who can put anything into any category, and somebody decided it would be nice to have an increase in R&D?
