John, I believe the official definition of the TICK is the number of NYSE issue up less the number of NYSE issue down. So it reflects the advancers vs. decliners in a formula. It tends to lead the market movements. Often I will see the tick make a massive move up, while certain issues are greatly lagging. This allows me to jump in and scalp [daytrade] the momentum based on the "correction" of that particular stock to the rest of the market. . . . assuming that a 'rising tide floats all boats' . . eventually. . . but I stick to the obvious names like CIEN, BEAS, AMCC, NTAP, etc. for such quickie day trades. And this is like throwing a quarter into a slot machine while walking through a casino. . . it isn't the MAIN play, by any means. . . just supplementary.
