The question for folks engaging is hedging is not: can u have a very bad year versus what you would have had you not been hedged (of course you can) -- the question is what happens through a number of different periods of price strength and weakness -- hedging done properly reduces risks and smooths operating earnings ... nothing wrong with it per se, except many can't resist the temptation to trade once they get involved
