You downplayed the political ramifications of the expansion of slavery into the new states. This issue was of primary concern, and probably in terms of the raw wielding of political power (which brought about the war) was the central item next to the economic issue. The moral outrage was not as widespread as suggested, nor was it pervasive throughout the Union prior to the war. The economic and political stakes far outweighed (each on its own) the moral issue.

You might liken the political issue to the contemporary discussion about dispensing with the Electoral College (since it is no longer convenient for the Democrats).
