<Nobody in their right mind condones slavery in this day and age, but George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were born into long-standing slave-holding. They couldn't help being born into slave-holding any more than the slaves could help being born into slavery. They deserve to be honored for creating a nation under a constitution that eventually abolished slavery< I agree completely. My point was that despite being born into such a system, both men understood its inherent evil and the inconsistency of its existence in a nation that proclaimed its faithfullness to the freedom of man to chose his own destiny. The fact that they both manumitted their slaves shows that they understood this and rose above when so many others couldn't.
