It is one thing to claim slavery provided an economic benefit. It is another to claim people fought to keep slavery purely for money.

They did not fight to keep slavery just for money. They fought to keep it because they did not want blacks on the same social level as they. They fought to keep it because it provided an economic benefit. They fought to keep it because they claimed God ordained black enslavement.

I am real, and can see the issue from all sides of the coin. I cannot justify the actions of the Confederacy. They looked squarely at the basis upon which America was founded, officially rejected it, then waged war to erect a country founded on exactly the opposite basis. No less man than Alexander Stephens, the Confederate Vice President said these words.

I am an American. The Confederacy was hostile to everything I am about. Were it ever to raise its ugly head again, I would fight it with my whole heart. I would send my sons to fight it. I would sick my dogs upon it.
