Dear Johannes: I was referring to what started the War between the States. Its true the South wanted slavery to extend into the new territories like Texas. That was because COTTON WAS KING and cotton severely destroys the soil. Not being as technically advanced as we are today, they merely kept moving the cotton fields west as they were worn out. They needed Slavery to go along with them. But the North had no highminded purpose POLITICALLY at the time it was pure BUSINESS as I indicated. Lincoln freed the slaves late in the war as HE FEARED England was going to enter on the side of the South. Since England had already freed theirs it made it politically impossible for England to enter.
Now, before anyone gets on their Highhorse I am not advocating slavery nor do I advocate it was morally right. I am merely stating the FACTS as to what caused the War between the States. JDN
