AVANEX - BURN OUTS!!??

This is a posting from a Motley Fool Thread (Worrying!) :-

Victor,
I wanted to thank you for reminding is all about the important issue of power handling in high
channel-count systems. We have not discussed that in a while, and as people start referring to
100,000 channels or whatever, they haven't really talked about the power requirement. The
Simon Cao description of a switchless internet means many many many wavelengths on a fiber
and even if each wavelength had 20mW of power, at 100,000 lambdas you now have to manage 2kW of
power! yah right! That, folks, is the amount of energy emitted by 20 x 100W light bulbs all in
the space of a 9 micron fiber. Right now in labs people are investigating the effects of high
powers on optical connectors. They are finding that at around 1w or higher, any significant
amount of dirt on a connector causes the fiber to burn. It's an interesting effect, because as
the fiber burns the poor interface moves back into the fiber cable and the burning moves
backwards at an astonishing rate, destroying the whole cable! Thanks, harry
