It must be your EC (European Conglomeration) perspective. -g- The American wooden telephone pole is the ubiquitous symbol of economic progress, even if it does carry far more electrical power lines than telephone lines.

It serves three main purposes :

1. It serves as the elevated support for the high power electrical transformers which periodically explode and distribute toxic chemicals over the neighborhood.

2. It serves as a barrier and alarm system for intoxicated drivers who break off the poles with their vehicles and call attention to their plight by cutting off power for half the county.

3. They serve as a calibration system for ice storms as they fail from either ice coated electrical wires or from impacts from friction free vehicles, even without drunk drivers.

I must assume that Europe keeps its electrical distribution system, like its productive economy, underground. -g-
