well, that's because currencies nowadays depend on 'hot money' flows more than anything else. i have no doubt however that reality and fundamentals will reassert themselves eventually. let's not forget also that European and US economic data are not directly comparable due to the use of hedonic deflators in the US, and yet the currency markets made as if they were. presumably the majority of market participants is either not aware of these concepts or doesn't understand them. as Galbraith has said, there's a lot more money out there than there is intelligence to guide it.
