Jefferson was objective about it. He acknowledge slavery was wrong, and still owned slaves. That is pretty dang amazing if you ask me. The guy knew it was wrong, and yet in effect kept slaves because of expedience. He could have argued slavery was morally right, as did the Confederacy. But he did not, even when pressured. He said 'whatever blacks' abiliites, they are yet deserving of freedom.'

Jefferson is worthy of our highest honour, despite his failings. He publicly acknowledged the truth (via the Declaration of Independence), and refused to defend a lie.
