Now, the science is catching up to my prejudice. It turns out that warmups waste too much of the energy you should be using for lifts. And they don't do much to reduce injuries. In Tsatsoulines "Beyond Stretching," he talks about how a world class powerlifter not only does not take warmups, he often sleeps between lifts and goes right from wakeup to max poundages. I don't know if I'm that anti-warmup. <g> Drop sets are a lot like a reverse pyramid. However, if I remember the regular pyramid, you used the same weight for lower reps each time. With drop sets, you do lower the weight. On the 1-6 program, many people on the Testosterone website have mentioned that they do more of a 2-5, with great success. I've tried it and found it works about the same. The idea is basically to trick your muscles into thinking that the 5 or 6 rep weight is light. Since your muscles aren't stupid and your brain eventually lets them in on the secret, you can't make progress on the 1-6 or 2-5 forever. But it is nice for a change and, as I mentioned, for sticking points. However, some folks aren't suited for the 1-6. I know people whose 1 rep max is only about 10% more than their 6 rep max. Different genetics can require different methods of attack. I don't think that any one set/rep combo is the best. I believe there are different combos that work for different folks. And that you need variation once in a while not to become stale. Steroid users tend to use cycling. I prefer to emphasize another lift and de-emphasize one that is maxxing out. Or using a different form. For example, when I maxxed out on regular dead lifts, I started emphasizing sumo deadlifts. When I max out on them, I expect the one arm dl to take precedent, or the one armed row. Then, I throw in some different set and rep combos like those mentioned above to keep the workout fresh. Both Pavel Tsatsouline and Mike Mentzer argue against this style, but it works for me while cycling my entire workout does not work for me.
