I think you are correct regarding the study. A direct hire as a cheap laborer was cheaper than maintaining a slave. Plus, the direct hire might have to pay taxes whereas the slave laborer would not.

The cheap laborer is still in the work force, and in my opinion, they are a necessary component of work force economics.

In my younger days, I was a cheap laborer. It allowed me to earn spending money, and it provided the employers an economical labor solution.
