The question I am raising is who owns the Gateways. The original plan was for the SPs to own and license them, but G*/LOR financed them and have not collected from the SPs. Why?

That answer to that question continues to evade capture, as does the answer to the question of what are the terms of the exclusivity agreements with the SPs.

Bob:

"There is value in the constellation, just needs some imagination and a good management team that know the business."

No value in a constellation that does not have the ability to route traffic on to / and off the constellation!! If the very life line of revenue is held hostage by the Gateway Owners..Even if GLP repossessed the Gateways due to "non-payment".. and I am sure that would be a long "litigious process". They GLP still does not own regulatory approval.. Now you have Gateways and Satellites, but no authority to use them.. It's still a ZERO VALUE to a prospective buyer.. Look Mr. Bondholder. Here is a great system.. Just no regulatory approvals!!!

It would be like owning bonds in a "cellular/PCS" company that has installed Wireless Infrastructure (Base Station, etc) that covered every inch of North America.. (All the infrastructure equipment is Vendor Financed).. Yet they have no regulatory approval or Spectrum Rights to turn on the equipment to start generating revenue.. How much is this company worth in Bankruptcy.. ZERO!!!

<A company such as Sprint PCS (are they related to pcs tel) could put the constellation to great use if they wanted too. It would allow them to globally grow their business incrementally.>

No Gateways, No Regulatory Approvals for Gateways or User Terminals...

Mr. Bondholder.. It's is VALUELESS IN BANKRUPTCY!!

<<The original plan was for the SPs to own and license
them, but G*/LOR financed them and have not collected from the SPs. >>

Well, the above statement is kind of an urban myth. G* has recorded quite a lot of incoming cash (nearly 70M$ as of 12/31/99, and more since then) for Gateways and UTs. Of course, it's spent more than that and carries a lot of both GWs and UTs on its balance sheet...but that's largely explainable by the fact that it financed 38 GWs and only 25 or so have been deployed, and by the fact that damn few UTs have been sold.

On a related point, when considering the various disaster scenarios for G*/Loral, it bears repeating that key territories are effectively controlled by G* and/or Loral, including Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Russia. Even if one accepts the premise (which I do not) that Vod and France Telecom are bad partners, there are lots of countries left where the SP is either controlled by G* management, or doesn't exist at all.
